Hablamos Español Expo Celebrates Elgin’s Hispanic Community

The 11th Annual Hablamos Español Expo returns to The Centre of Elgin and the Heritage Ballroom, 100 Symphony Way in downtown Elgin, this Saturday, March 7 from 10:00 a.m-3:00 p.m. This free event, which draws more than 1,000 people into downtown Elgin annually, is a celebration of Hispanic heritage, culture, arts, business and community.

The following is just a sampling of what visitors can expect to see and do at this year’s Hablamos Español Expo:

• New this year will be the inaugural Prom & Quinceañera Fashion Show featuring U-46 students showcasing beautiful Latina fashions from Bella’s Fashions, 156 E. Chicago Street, in downtown Elgin and prom dresses from YWCA Elgin’s iHeart Prom Expo (March 13) and Cinderella’s Closet event (March 21), where teens can get a prom dress for less starting at only $15. • Award-winning television anchor and author, Angelica Atondo, will be the event's keynote speaker at 1:30pm. She will also be signing copies of her book, Superate Mujer, which has sold more than 100,000 copies.

• Side Street Studio Arts' Assistant Director Roberto Martinez will curate an art exhibit entitled "Unidos (More Than One)" - a group exhibition of art representing a multitude of cultures within the sole representation of Mexican-American. From uncanny Aztec alteration to the politics on current immigration issues, this exhibition is an outreach for spectators with similar experiences. "Unidos" features works by Lucia Espinoza, Gustavo Luna, Frances Hernandez, Ignacio Martinez, Roberto Martinez, and Adrian Vasquez.

Organizacion Mexicana de Elgin will also coordinate children's games and activities in the Craft Room.
